Two area teams celebrated their conference championships tonight and hopefully one more will do the same Saturday.
I got a text message earlier this evening from Mick Cropp, Glasgow boys head coach. The Yellowjackets won the Central Activities Conference outright for the first time since the 2006-07 season, beating Keytesville 66-51 to finish conference play with an 11-1 record. The girls also won at Keytesville, but I haven’t received a score from the game.
The boys won’t have much time to celebrate. In less than 12 hours, they’ll make a lengthy road trip to Tina-Avalon for the first round of district play. The boys face Malta Bend at 1:15 p.m. and the girls play Bosworth right after that at 2:30 p.m.
Also, the Harrisburg boys have plenty of reason to celebrate tonight as well. Assistant coach Kyle Fisher texted me earlier tonight as well, saying Harrisburg topped North Callaway 73-45. The win give the Bulldogs a 6-2 record in Mid-Missouri Conference play and a share of the conference title with Southern Boone. The JV boys also won 52-44.
The Harrisburg girls will travel to North Callaway on Saturday in a JV/varsity doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. A win seals at least a tie for the conference title, depending on how Hallsville does against the Southern Boone girls Saturday evening as well. Both teams currently have a 6-1 conference record, splitting their season series.
In other scores tonight, the New Franklin boys and girls were swept by Sturgeon. The girls narrowly lost 43-38, while the boys fell 56-46. During Greg Buescher’s interview on KRES Radio’s “Overtime” show, he said that Benji Dorson coached the New Franklin boys team tonight while Jim Schlotzhauer was with his wife for the delivery of their baby. Congratulations to Jim and his family!
Well, that does it for our regular season. Since I stayed put tonight, I’ll be off to the races early tomorrow to head to Tina-Avalon for the Glasgow basketball games. Good luck to all of the area teams in district play and stay tuned next week for complete coverage — including recaps and predictions — of the boys and girls games in the Class 2 District 7 Tournament.
